Local coverage

## Scaffolding Cover Across Canterbury
Canterbury is one of the furthest towns in our regular coverage area, reached from our Hadlow yard via the A2, and we take it on for both domestic and commercial scaffolding work throughout the city and its outlying suburbs. Whether it's a house near the cathedral precincts, a shop unit on the High Street, or a new-build on the edge of the city towards Sturry or Wincheap, Katie coordinates the booking and paperwork while Mason and the crew handle the build itself.

Canterbury's historic centre is unlike almost anywhere else we work: the cathedral, the medieval street pattern within the old city walls, and dense concentrations of listed timber-framed and Georgian buildings around Palace Street, Best Lane and the Buttermarket mean every scaffold in that part of the city has to be planned with real precision. Fixings need to avoid damaging historic fabric, footprints have to work within extremely narrow lanes, and in many cases we're liaising around conservation constraints and, where relevant, the interests of Canterbury Cathedral's own precincts. We take the same care with a small shopfront scaffold on the High Street as we would with a larger job, because the margin for error on these buildings is small.

Outside the old city walls, Canterbury has a very different character. Areas like St Stephen's, Wincheap and Sturry have a mix of Victorian terraces, 1930s semis and post-war housing, which call for more conventional domestic scaffolding: roof work, chimney repairs, extensions and repointing on brick that's more standard to work with than the timber-framed buildings in the centre. Further out towards the University of Kent and Canterbury Christ Church University, and the newer estates off the A28 and A257, we see more extension and new-build scaffolding on properties with generally easier vehicle access.

Canterbury's status as a university city and major tourist destination adds a layer most towns don't have: pedestrian footfall around the cathedral, the High Street and the Westgate Towers area is heavy for much of the year, and scaffolds in these zones need robust hoarding, clear pedestrian routes and, frequently, a pavement licence from Canterbury City Council. We build this into our planning and timing from the outset, often arranging deliveries early in the morning before the streets fill up with visitors and students.

We regularly take on chimney and roof scaffolds on the taller Victorian terraces around St Dunstan's and Northgate, repointing work on older brick facing the coastal-influenced damp that this part of Kent gets more of than inland areas, and full-house renovation scaffolds on period cottages tucked into the lanes near the cathedral. Commercial access scaffolding for shopfronts and offices around the High Street and St George's Street is also a steady part of our Canterbury workload.

Being close to the coast, Canterbury gets more driving rain and damp weather than our villages further inland around Hadlow and Tonbridge, which affects timber-framed and older brick buildings in particular. We factor this into scheduling weatherproofing and temporary roof systems, especially for re-roofing projects on the city's older housing stock where timing around wet weather really matters.

Whatever the job, from a single ladder tower for a shopfront sign repair on the High Street to a full scaffold wrap on a listed cottage near the cathedral precincts, we bring CISRS-carded scaffolders, full RAMS and inspection paperwork, and our standard six-week hire period to every Canterbury job, with the same care for heritage buildings that this city demands.

### Heritage and listed building care
We plan scaffolds around Canterbury's timber-framed and listed buildings near the cathedral and old city walls with fixings and footprints chosen to protect historic fabric.

### Pedestrian-heavy site management
Scaffolds near the High Street and cathedral precincts are built with robust hoarding and clear pedestrian routes, timed around the city's heavy tourist and student footfall.

### Coastal damp and weatherproofing
Canterbury's proximity to the coast brings more driving rain, so we plan temporary roof systems and weatherproofing carefully for re-roofing projects on older housing.

Local conditions

## Common Scaffolding Challenges In Canterbury
Canterbury's historic core and heavy footfall create scaffolding challenges that are quite different from a typical Kent town.

### Timber-framed and listed buildings
Buildings around Palace Street and the cathedral precincts need fixings and footprints planned to protect historic timber frames and masonry.

### Narrow medieval lanes
Streets within the old city walls are often too narrow for standard vehicle access, requiring careful delivery planning and, sometimes, hand-carrying of materials.

### Heavy pedestrian and tourist footfall
The High Street and cathedral area see constant foot traffic for much of the year, so scaffolds need robust hoarding and clearly managed pedestrian routes.

### Coastal damp and driving rain
Canterbury's closeness to the coast brings more damp weather than inland Kent, which affects timing for re-roofing and weatherproofing work.

### Pavement licensing in the city centre
Scaffolds projecting over footways near the High Street or Westgate Towers usually require a pavement licence from Canterbury City Council, which we arrange.

Common questions

## Scaffolding In CanterburyQuestions Answered
Still unsure? Ring 07355 037000 and speak to Katie or Mason directly, or use the contact form.

Do you cover Canterbury?+Yes. Canterbury and its surrounding suburbs, including Wincheap, Sturry and St Stephen's, are part of our regular working area from Hadlow.

How quickly can you get to a Canterbury job?+Canterbury is a longer drive from our Hadlow yard than our closer villages, reached via the A2, but we schedule surveys and installs promptly once a job is confirmed.

What does scaffolding cost in Canterbury?+Costs depend heavily on the property, particularly for listed buildings in the old city, so we always provide a free site survey and a written quote within a day rather than a phone estimate.

Do you offer emergency scaffolding in Canterbury?+Yes, we provide a fast response for emergency and storm damage scaffolding, day or night, with the phone answered out of hours.

Do I need a licence for scaffolding near the cathedral or High Street?+If a scaffold projects over a public footway in the city centre, we handle the pavement licence application with Canterbury City Council as part of the job.

How long is a typical scaffold hire?+Our standard hire period is six weeks, included in the quote, with extensions available if your Canterbury project takes longer, common with heritage restoration work.

Are you insured to work on listed buildings?+Yes, we carry £10 million public liability and £10 million employers' liability insurance and take particular care with fixings on Canterbury's listed and timber-framed buildings.

How do you manage scaffolding around busy pedestrian areas?+We build in robust hoarding, clear pedestrian routes and early delivery timing to work around Canterbury's heavy tourist and student footfall.

Can you provide design drawings for unusual buildings?+Yes, for non-standard scaffolds, common on Canterbury's timber-framed and irregular historic buildings, we can supply design drawings and calculations at extra charge.

Will scaffolding disrupt neighbours or nearby shops?+We plan access, hoarding and working hours carefully around Canterbury's dense city centre to keep disruption to neighbours, shops and passers-by to a minimum.
