That means continuous boarded lifts, sensible lift heights and a gap between the boards and the wall that suits the build-up going on. That gap matters more on cladding than on almost any other job. Battens, insulation, breather membranes and finished boards all add thickness, and a scaffold set too tight leaves your fixers working with no room, while one set too far out leaves an unsafe reach and a gap that needs guarding. We plan lift heights around the cladding coursing wherever possible so fixers are working at chest height rather than reaching over their heads or bending to the deck. It's a small planning decision at survey that makes a real difference to speed and finish quality. Ties are planned with your cladding contractor so they land where they can be sealed and made good, and are removed and patched in the right sequence as the elevation is completed rather than left as an afterthought. In detail ## How we approach cladding scaffolding in detail The detail on a cladding scaffold is mostly geometry and sequencing, both of which need deciding before the first standard goes in the ground. ### Materials used Standard tube and fitting scaffold with fully boarded lifts is our default, because it lets us set the exact distance from the wall and adjust bay by bay around bays, gables and returns rather than accepting fixed frame dimensions. Boards are laid tight with toe boards and double guardrails, and brick guards or netting added where material could fall from the deck. Where sheeting is needed to keep the facade dry during a fix, we allow for the additional wind load in the tie pattern. ### Methods and sequencing We set out from the finished cladding face rather than the existing wall, so the working gap is right once the battens, insulation and boards are on. Lifts are then set to suit coursing, with the top lift high enough to fix the final course and any trim comfortably. Ties are installed into sound substrate and their removal is sequenced with the cladding fix, so the scaffold never loses more lateral restraint than it can afford, and holes are made good as the elevation is closed up. ### Service variations Full-elevation independent scaffolds suit whole-house or whole-block recladding. Bay or gable-only scaffolds suit repairs and partial replacement, and can often be moved round the building in phases to reduce hire. Loading bays and material platforms can be built in where cladding boards and panels have to be lifted and stored at height, and temporary roof systems added where the works open up a roof at the same time. ### Situations it applies to Timber-clad barn conversions and new houses, weatherboarded Kent cottages, rainscreen and panel systems on commercial units, external wall insulation on solid-wall properties, and facade repairs where panels or boards have failed. On commercial cladding programmes the emphasis is on programme dates, RAMS and site paperwork, public protection where the facade fronts a footpath, and coordination with other trades working the same elevation.
